MIDDLESBROUGH will turn to local hero Jonathan Woodgate to be their next boss — if Tony Pulis quits.

Boro supremo Steve Gibson is still a huge fan of Pulis despite a growing amount of discontent among the supporters on Teesside.

Pulis is heading for a second straight top six finish but is still unpopular.

The Welshman, 61, will not be sacked by Gibson but the pair will have crunch talks soon after the season ends.

And coach Woodgate will get the nod if Pulis departs.

Woodgate, 39, is from the Boro area and came back as a conquering hero in his playing days after his time with Leeds and Real Madrid.

With Gibson aiming to work within a tight budget — unless Boro go up through the play-offs — Woodgate would also be a cheap option.

Pulis has been unable to spend too heavily despite the need for new blood, a sign of things to come at the Riverside.

Woodgate would get the time, plus backing from the fans, which Pulis has lacked in recent months.

Boro were beaten by Norwich at the Riverside on Saturday which sent the Canaries top of the Championship table.
