Gary Lineker says Mauricio Pochettino told him Tottenham Hotspur need investment this summer to keep the club moving forward.

The former Spurs striker suggested the club could lose Pochettino if they don’t back him with transfer funds this summer.

Pochettino has fuelled speculation about his future, admitting he could leave Tottenham if they win the Champions League final against Liverpool last month – he has recently been linked with the newly vacant Juventus post.

The Argentinian has spoken about the need to begin a new chapter, a new project, with the Londoners, and to do that additional transfer funds will be needed.

Lineker recently met Pochettino for the first time, and in an interview with the Times the Match of the Day presenter revealed what he had been told by the Spurs boss.

“I interviewed [Pochettino] a couple of weeks ago for the Premier League Show; it was the first time I’d actually met him,” Lineker said.

“He’s a very engaging character, clearly massively knowledgeable, insightful on the game, and he’s clearly one of the best managers or coaches in world football.

“But they do need investment, he said that to me himself. And he needs to be backed. I suspect, if he’s not backed, they’ll probably find it quite difficult to keep hold of him. So it really is a seminal moment for Tottenham.

“They’ve got to decide what they are. Yes, they’ve got a great new stadium, which perhaps halted expenditure to a degree, but whether they’re going to move forward and be a club that can compete in other Champions League finals, rather than just a one-off against all the odds, remains to be seen.”

Tottenham have done brilliantly to reach the Champions League final this season but they ended up scraping into fourth place by a single point.

Their domestic struggles have been the result of gaps in the squad, injuries and fatigue, and only investment will solve that issue this summer.
