STEVE BRUCE has axed ex-Manchester United target Sean Longstaff from his Newcastle team for today’s trip to Norwich.

The £50m-rated midfielder started the Magpies’ opening game of the season last Sunday.

But Toon manager Bruce has decided to leave out the 21-year-old following the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, according to The Times.

He will be replaced in the starting XI at Carrow Road by South Korean Ki Sung-yueng, who reportedly voiced his displeasure at being dropped against the Gunners.

Longstaff was arguably the biggest success story of Newcastle’s season in the 2018/19 campaign.

His performances caught the eye of United’s Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But a knee injury in March ruled him out until the summer as he was forced to miss England U21s’ European Championship.

With Newcastle slapping the £50m asking price on his head, United failed to land the starlet after deciding the fee was too much, with other reports suggesting they had upped it to £70m.

Bruce’s decision might not go down too well with the Geordie faithful, who have taken Longstaff to their hearts.

The boss, who was announced as Rafa Benitez’s successor on July 17, ended up with four defenders but no midfielders on the bench against Arsenal.

He faced further questions after new signing Jetro Willems, who operates as a left-back, came on and began playing out of position before he was switched from midfield back to his natural position after a few minutes.

Speaking about the Willems confusion, Bruce said: “I put Jetro on in midfield, where he played all last season for Frankfurt.

“Very quickly I thought, ‘Do you know something? That’s a bit unfair on him — maybe I should have done it beforehand — because he’s making his debut I will put him on in his favoured position,’ so I switched him very, very quickly.”
