Lazio are closing in on the signing of former Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente, according to reports in Italy, but there remains talk of a surprise swoop from Manchester United.

Llorente left Spurs when his contract expired at the end of June. The Spaniard endured a mostly disappointing stay in north London but came good in the Champions League last season, scoring important goals against Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City before playing a crucial role against Ajax in the semi-finals.

Since leaving, there has been talk of Tottenham potentially offering Llorente another one-year contract, but most of the rumours have concerned a possible move to Italy. That now appears to be coming to fruition.

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport claims Lazio are woking on finalising a deal for Llorente, although there are concerns over the player’s wage demands. Inter Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina all apparently hold an interest, too, so there could be a decision to make.

However, Team Talk claims Llorente is holding out for a surprise move to Manchester United. The Red Devils are said to have contacted the 34-year-old before the English transfer deadline when they were looking for a replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who joined Inter.

We think it’s unlikely United will go back in for Llorente, but stranger things have happened.
