Martial still like Marmite despite bagging 50th goal for Man Utd against Wolves

By | 19th August 2019

ANTHONY MARTIAL scored his milestone 50th goal for Manchester United to stick two fingers up to the critics who claim he isn’t good enough to fill the No.9 shirt.

Yet there will still be plenty of doubters who refuse to be convinced, despite the sensational strike which lit up Molineux last night.

Anthony Martial is still like Marmite despite scoring his 50th Man Utd goal

United ace Martial might as well have MARMITE printed on the back of his shirt above the controversial number which carries so much significance in English football.

It seemed fitting we were at Molineux, where Andy Gray and Steve Bull were traditional No.9s who would bowl over their granny to get on the end of a goalscoring chance.

Early on last night Marcus Rashford chopped and checked and left Matt Doherty for dead before swinging in a sublime cross Gray and Bull would have died for.

Low, hard, inviting – a nightmare for defenders to defend and poor Willy Boly couldn’t cope as the ball flashed across goal.

Martial? He watched it all happen as if he was a bystander, when you know Andy Gray would have taken Boly, the ball and probably goalie Rui Patricio into the back of the net with him to apply the finishing touch.

However there are many different types of strikers and Martial is never going to be a Steve Bull in a china shop – no matter how much some fans want him to!

He comes from a different era and it doesn’t mean he can’t be a hit once his fledgling partnership with Marcus Rashford matures.

There was a fine glimpse of the potential this pair have after 27 minutes when Martial grabbed that milestone 50th strike in United colours.

It was Rashford who played the pivotal role, drifting in to the middle of the pitch to join Martial and create an overload as Luke Shaw filled the spave the England striker had vacated on the left.

Shaw fed Lingard, who moved the ball on to Rashford and, with Wolves defence bamboozled, Rashford rolled the ball into the path of his French teammate who lashed his left foot shot high into the rook of Wolves’ net.

Stunning. Absolutely stunning. Dare I say Gray and Bull would have nodded in approval, while cursing under their breath.

It’s taken Martial 176 games to hit the 50 mark in all competitions. Andy Cole only took 65 to hit 50 PREMIER goals …. Alan Shearer 66 games to hit the same mark.

Martial will never be that type of striker. But it doesn’t mean he can’t be another type of striker, dove-tailing with Rashford to keep the goals flowing for United.

Only time will tell – but that’s two goals from two Premier games for the French hitman.
