Mike Dean has been announced as the referee for Tottenham’ game against Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

It’s the first time that the 51-year-old will be in charge of a Spurs match since he clashed with boss Mauricio Pochettino after their 2-1 defeat at Burnley back in February.

The Argentine was left furious that day and reportedly said ‘you know what you are’ to the referee and had to be held back by assistant Jesus Perez after Dean gave the Clarets a corner that led to Chris Wood’s opening goal.

Pochettino was handed a two-match touchline ban and fined £10,000, but will be hoping for a stress-free afternoon when Dean referees for the first time at Tottenham’s new stadium.

It’s Dean’s third assignment of the campaign after officiating on Manchester City’s opening-day thumping at West Ham United before taking the reigns for Arsenal’s narrow victory over Burnley last Saturday.

Dean also refereed Tottenham’s 4-2 defeat at rivals Arsenal last December where he sent off Jan Vertonghen as well as their loss to Manchester United at Wembley a month later, meaning Spurs have lost their last three matches when Dean has been in the middle.
