Paper Talk: Shock destination likely as Spurs agree to flog star for £18m

By | 21st August 2019

Tottenham are close to offloading an unwanted midfielder in a surprise £18m deal, while one of Unai Emery’s Arsenal favourites is set to land a big pay-rise, according to Wednesday’s papers.

BELGIUM TRANSFER ON CARDS FOR WANYAMA

Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama could be jumping across the Channel after West Ham failed to sign him before the closure of the English transfer window.

Belgian side Bruges are believed to close to securing the £18m-rated Kenya international before the European window shuts on September 2, the Daily Express says.

The 28-year-old has slipped down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino and the club record swoop for Tanguy Ndombele means the club are now willing to let him move on.

The former Celtic man was close to joining West Ham on loan before the transfer window shut and it now seems a move to Belgium is on the cards for the Kenya international.

While the £18m fee won’t represent an issue, the Belgians will need to seek a reduction on the player’s £65,000 a week wages, with the report suggesting they may need to pay him around half that amount.

But if Wanyama can agree terms, the move is expected to go through with Spurs happy to sell for the £18m offered by the Belgians.

Before the season started, Pochettino spoke about some of his players’ futures with the club, including left-back Danny Rose.

“I told you in Singapore and China. I think I was very clear about the situation of the squad,” he said.

“Danny Rose like another 25 or 26 players are here and are my players.

“I don’t know what I need to say because I was very clear in the past.”
