Toby Alderweireld could be about to perform a U-turn on his future by signing a new contract with Tottenham, according to the Sun, while Christian Eriksen could still leave before the European transfer window closes.

Both Alderweireld and Eriksen have one year left on their contracts and had been tipped to leave Spurs this summer. Alderweireld’s £25 million release clause last month. Bizarrely, no English clubs activated the clause and Roma, the only foreign club who have been heavily linked with the Belgian, no longer appear to be pursuing a deal.

As a result, the Sun claims Tottenham are increasingly confident Alderiwelred will agree terms a new contract. Spurs don’t usually offer long-term extensions to players aged 30 or over. Alderweireld turned 30 in March, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a new two-year deal announced in the near future.

In contrast, Eriksen is still expected to leave Tottenham by the European deadline at the beginning of next month. Real Madrid are apparently preparing a late offer for Dane, who is said to be keen on the idea of moving to the Bernabeu. But as we know, a lot can happen in the space of a few days.
