Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic set for fitness tests ahead of Newcastle clash after suffering knee injury against Wales

CHELSEA will need to check on the fitness of midfielder Mateo Kovacic after he was injured while on international duty.

The Croatia midfielder crumpled under a challenge from behind by defender Ben Davies in the the build up to Gareth Bale’s equaliser on Sunday night.

And he did not reappear for the second half as his nation ground out a 1-1 draw in a bruising enounter in Cardiff.

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said that Kovacic had appeared to be fine after the game – but would need to be assessed.

Dalic said: “He seems to be fine. He felt his knee in that challenge so we’ll see in the next few days what the diganosis is.”

Kovacic’s leg appeared to go underneath him although he did not appear in too much discomfort as he left the stadium.

Frank Lampard will be keen to get him checked out quickly as the Blues face games in three different competitions before the end of the month.

They will face Newcastle and Burnley in the Premier League, Ajax in the Champions League and Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea are also sweating over the fitness of Andreas Christensen after he limped out of Denmark’s win over Switzerland.

It is not yet known how long Christensen will be out for, but he came off the pitch with a groin problem near the end of the match.
