Mauricio Pochettino has been urged to stay at Tottenham by the club’s former manager Harry Redknapp.

Spurs’ current run of poor form has led to speculation about Mauricio Pochettino’s future. The Argentinian has entered his sixth season in north London, and while he is still rated among the word’s top coaches there is a feeling a parting of ways is inevitable.

But Redknapp, who managed Tottenham for four years before leaving in 2012, has suggested Pochettino will not be able to find a better job if he leaves, even if Manchester United come calling.

“Listen, he’s the manager of a London club, a great place to live, I’m sure he’s earning an absolute fortune, they have a great training ground, they have a great stadium, and he has great players,” Redknapp told the Mirror.

“Where does he go better than Tottenham? Liverpool don’t want him, they’ve got Jurgen Klopp. Pep (Guardiola) is at Manchester City, they don’t want him.

“Where is he going to go with a better team than what Tottenham have got? There isn’t one around, with a better stadium, better training ground and in England.

“OK, if Real Madrid comes up and he may fancy going to Spain, obviously being from Argentina. The language wouldn’t be a problem and living in Madrid would be very nice. Managing a club like Real Madrid, if that came up I’m sure it would be a difficult one for him to turn down.

“But other than that, I don’t see where he goes. Manchester United? Maybe but Pochettino is not silly, he knows he’s got a massive rebuilding job there.

“Manchester United gave it to David Moyes who did wonderful at Everton. Then they gave it to Louis van Gaal who is one of the world’s great managers. Then they gave it to Jose Mourinho who has won everything there is to win. They couldn’t turn it around.

“Now Ole is struggling with it. Poch is not silly. He knows there is a long-term rebuilding process and that could take years.”

Meanwhile, former Everton boss Sam Allardyce also believes Pochettino would be better off staying at Spurs than moving to Manchester United.

Via Metro, he said: “I can’t see Mauricio going anywhere at the moment. At the moment, Tottenham are a better squad than Manchester United – and that is a telling fact.

“It’s alright saying, ‘this is Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world’, but has it got the team to go with it to represent Manchester United?”

The words of Redknapp and Allardyce echo recent comments by ex-Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov, who suggested Pochettino “needs to stay” at Spurs – read more about those quotes here.

That so many onlookers are calling for Pochettino to stay put is testament to the job the Argentinian has done. Regardless of recent results, it seems the majority of people believe Pochettino should be given the opportunity to turn things around.
