Pochettino has major beef with Tottenham over failure to sign Barcelona star

By | 15th November 2019

One of Mauricio Pochettino’s many beefs with Tottenham is reported to be their failure to pursue Philippe Coutinho over the summer.

Barcelona, who signed the playmaker from Liverpool for £142million in 2018, were trying to offload the Brazilian forward on loan.

The Spurs boss had first-hand experience of Coutinho, having coached him when he was in charge of Espanyol, and wanted to sign him again this summer but lost out when Bayern Munich made their move, as reported in The Sun.

Pochettino has complained endlessly about the need to spend big to reinvigorate a Spurs squad that has shown a certain staleness over the last 18 months, despite reaching the Champions League final last season.

The report adds that if Coutinho had been signed, Pochettino is convinced the rebuild would already be well under way.

But the Brazilian has struggled to recreate his best form at Bayern – scoring just twice and was recently dropped to the bench as the German giants eventually parted company with boss Niko Kovac.

Pochettino is currently rotating his central playmaking options between Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, although loan signing fellow attacking midfielder Giovani Lo Celso has shown in his last two starts that he is starting to get to grips with life in England.

But that is unlikely to stop Pochettino dipping into the transfer in January, with Spurs continually linked with new playmaking targets.
