FRANK LAMPARD claimed he may not sign any new players this month – but he might have to change his mind after that performance.
Chelsea threw away the chance to close the gap on third-placed Leicester City after a disastrous 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.
SunSport have rated Chelsea’s stars…
Kepa Arrizabalaga – 4
Had very little to do in the first half, but was saved by the crossbar after a close range header from Joelinton glided past him.
And when he was tested in stoppage time, Newcastle snatched the winner with a close range header by Isaac Hayden. Shocking.
Reece James – 8
The 20-year-old showed exactly why Lampard was so keen to tie him down with a new long-term deal and he backed up Paul Merson’s claims that he can cross like David Beckham.
The 20-year-old managed to keep a lid on Allan Saint-Maximin, but raised serious concerns when he was hauled off in the 75th minute after he appeared to injure his shoulder.
Antonio Rudiger – 4
The German defender looked shaky at the back – particularly in the first half.
He was wasteful in possession and caught out of position on several occasions. He failed to show why he should start ahead of Kurt Zouma.
Andreas Christensen – 5
The clash at St Mary’s was only the second time he has played alongside Rudiger in a back four this season. And it showed.
But individually, Christensen did the basics well and created some good moves from the back.
Cesar Azpilicueta – 5
It was not a convincing display 30-year-old. Azpilicueta tended to slow the game down by turning back inside as Chelsea tried to press up the pitch.
His crosses rarely found one of his team-mates, but defensively he was strong.
N’Golo Kante – 6
Made an instant impact on the game after he made his return from a hamstring injury that ruled him out of the win over Burnley.
He had a chance to break the deadlock in the first half, but he fired his effort straight into the body of Martin Dubravka.
Jorginho – 6
Chelsea were playing far too narrow at times, but Jorginho tried his best to use the width at St. Mary’s. The 28-year-old always looked out wide to Willian when he picked up possession – which opened up the game nicely.
Mason Mount – 4
The English star failed to show why he deserves his spot in the starting line-up ahead of Ross Barley – who replaced him in the 67th minute.
He missed a header in the first half, his passing was poor and he did not create enough chances for Hudson-Odoi and Abraham.
Willian – 3
The Tottenham target saw a lot of the ball, but his final product was shocking.
Willian overcomplicate almost every move by pulling out unnecessary stepovers at every chance possible.
He had a chance to open the scoring in the second half, but dragged his shot wide of the post.
LATEST CHELSEA NEWS
Tammy Abraham – 6
The 22-year-old saw his first effort of the game fly way over the crossbar.
He then hit the crossbar with a flashy flick, but it wouldn’t have counted anyway as he was in an offside position.
Abraham was replaced by Michy Batshuayi in the 80th minute after being marked out of the game by Newcastle’s defence.
Callum Hudson-Odoi – 5
An incredibly mediocre performance from the 19-year-old on his 50th appearance for the club.
He looked a threat on the rare occasion that he was in possession, but he went missing for big chunks of the game.
