Mourinho’s one-word verdict on Tottenham CL exit amid lengthy injury rant

By | 10th March 2020

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho said that his side’s exit from the Champions League on Tuesday would be “good” for the long-term benefit of the club.

Spurs were beaten 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 tie as the German side rounded off a 4-0 aggregate win to progress to the quarter-finals.

Tottenham went into the game winless in five and without the likes of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and, more recently, Steven Bergwijn.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Mourinho was asked how detrimental the result is to his side’s trophy ambitions.

The Portuguese boss said: “I think probably it’s good. Sometimes difficult moments are moments that can prepare the future in a better way.”

Mourinho then provided his detailed perspective on how Spurs had reached this point in their season.

“Of course there is nobody to blame when it looks like in every match we have a traumatic injury and every traumatic injury ends with months out,” he said.

“So just before the first game against Leipzig, we lost Son two days before. We come to the second game, we lost Bergwijn before and I don’t want to speak about the ones we lost so, so, so, so long ago.

“That’s the history of this season. This season started with, of course, problems and you look to the results and when I arrived the position that we were in in the table.

“But then the negative history starts with Hugo [Lloris’s] first injury and it looks like it’s non-stop. You come to a Champions League knockout game and you look to our bench.

“You look to the pitch [Japhet] Tanganga in his first [Champions League] match, [Ryan] Sessegnon in his second match, it’s very hard.”

The result leaves Spurs without a win in their last six games – a run including five defeats – ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

Mourinho’s side sit four points behind the fourth-placed Red Devils ahead of the game in North London.
