Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield has had a moustache since age 18

A video supporting Movember campaign astronaut Chris Hadfield, prostate cancer awareness and encourage men to grow moustaches for donations is held every year in November.

For whatever reason, I decided: ‘I’m 18, I’m a man, I’m going to grow a moustache’ — and it was pathetic for years — it was awful,” he told the Canadian Press newswire this week.

Now 54, the Canadian scientist would have had no idea just how famous that moustache would become when he first decided to grow it while waiting for a train in Turkey. Following his stint as commander of the International Space Station, he even lent his influence and facial hair to the Movember campaign in a video that basically just entailed Hadfield saying “I have a moustache.” And yes, yes he does.

According to the CP report, Hadfield only shaved his moustache one time since becoming a legal adult, when training to become a test pilot.

“In the U.S. air force, if you want to get promoted you can’t have a moustache, for whatever reason,” he said. ”It just looks bad when they’re flipping through the pictures. Don’t ask me why.

“So, as I was at test pilot school, one of the guys was having his annual photograph taken (and) he had to shave off his moustache, so…in solidarity I shaved it off.”

His bald upper lip didn’t last long, however. According to Hadfield, “nobody was impressed” with how he looked without the moustache, least of all his wife Helene, so he quickly grew it back and has kept it ever since.
