The X Factor roared into its second week Sept. 18 with more of what we’ve come to expect from Fox’s musical titan: A ton of rejects – Simon Cowell‘s got to get his frustration out somehow, right? — and a few surprise performances that you’ll probably be talking to your co-workers about tomorrow. Unless you hate your co-workers, in which case you can just sit quietly and reflect on the episode by yourself like a weirdo.

Sensational Surprises
Sadly, Simon missed out on the biggest surprise of the night — nay, one of the biggest surprises of the season so far. Unassuming 15-year-old student Danie Geimer, dressed in floral and chilling behind a pair of glasses, busted out a killer rendition of The Animals‘ ”The House of the Rising Sun.” With Simon gone, the ladies took charge, and they loved her. In fact, Kelly Rowland even told her, “Ms. Thing, you are it!”

Another fun surprise came from Josh Levi, 14, who blew the judges’ minds by jazzing up Selena Gomez‘s “Come & Get It.” It was a risky move, but it definitely paid off. Demi Lovato seemed especially smitten with flirty Josh, whom Simon officially labeled “a future star.” And I have to agree! He could be another Justin Bieber, which is why it’s awkward that he sang a Selena song — and even more awkward that he sang a Selena song to Demi.

Sensational Surprises
There was also 18-year-old student Colton Pack, who got the judges’ attention with his energetic rendition of Jason Aldean‘s “Hicktown.” Per Demi, Colton has “a natural stage presence,” while Simon told him, “I really really really like you.” (Has Simon ever been that nice before? I’m kind of scared.)

Jeff Gutt was another rocker who impressed the judges, though he didn’t seem like such a sure thing at first. He initially auditioned with Aerosmith‘s “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing,” but Simon wasn’t feeling it. He stopped Jeff in the middle of his song, prompting him to start again, this time by putting his own spin on Radiohead‘s “Creep.” This got a much stronger reaction from the panel; even Paulina Rubio let out a “Holy moly!”

Group Effort
My final favorite audition came from Aknu, a three-man performing machine that churned out a mighty impressive cover of “Valerie.” Demi noticed something “special” about the trio, while Simon remarked that he felt like he was “watching Motown all over again.”

I see them going far!
