Apple Macintosh is 30 years old with iPhones and iPads

Apple have rolled-up the technology world with iPhones and iPads.

On 24 January 1984, the company introduced the Apple Macintosh, the first mass computer with a graphical user interface as well as the combination of keyboard and mouse. For three decades, the Mac has now defies the PC competition with Microsoft's Windows operating system - and also withstood the near-collapse of Apple late 90s.

"The Mac was a quantum leap," says Randy Wigginton, who belonged to the first generation of Apple employees. "We have not reinvented anything, but we did everything very accessible and supple." Prior to the launch of the Macintosh computer were pretty complicated office machines. Laymen had with the keyboard commands to fight for the control as a foreign language.

"The Mackintosh was the turning point," says Daniel Kottke, also an IT engineer at Apple the first hour. The last summer died at the age of 88 years of computer visionary Doug Engelbart invented the mouse had indeed already in the 1960s. The control on-screen icons was developed in the 1970s in the Xerox PARC research center in Silicon Valley. But the company with the apple logo implemented the new features for the broad market.

With the Macintosh, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs responded to the success of the personal computer (PC) from the technology giant IBM. With a highly acclaimed television commercial during the American football final Super Bowl in January 1984 Apple woke curiosity to the new machine.

The "1984" called spot leans the novel by George Orwell, and was seen as a swipe at the dominance of IBM: A young woman is running through a gray industrial world and freed the apathetic workers of Big Brother, the them through a screen to speaks. "On January 24, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh," says a voice at the end from the off. "And you'll see why 1984 will not be like '1984 '."

The first Mac came for just $ 2,500 (according to today's purchasing power around 4000 euros) on the market. The beige box with integrated 9-inch screen and floppy drive had a memory of 128 kilobytes. In the opinion of critics, the computing power for complex graphics operation ranged but barely. The sales figures fell short of computers from IBM, as the reason was also higher compared price.

The competition also waved to a graphical user interface, the end of 1985, Microsoft released the first version of its Windows operating system on the market. The Apple executives sensed plagiarism. "Steve Jobs, Microsoft has always been criticized, but with the release of Windows it was really hot. He said that they have copied us," Kottke recalled. But Apple failed in patent lawsuits, while jobs his company turned its back after an internal power struggle.

The Macintosh models had in the 1980s and 1990s, although a loyal following, especially among graphic designers and publishing Apple computers were used. But the mass market dominated Windows PCs. "Apple had in the late 90s well and like to be able to close up", says Kottke. "That would not be surprised a lot of people."

After the return of Jobs to Apple iMac, the company introduced in 1998, which paved the way back to profitability, together with the new operating system Mac OS X. With the combination of innovation and elegant design, the Apple computers in the new millennium also celebrate the mass market successes - the price but they are still considered precious products.
