iPhone 6 Unveiled With Three-Sided Display Concept that Apple will never build

The iPhone 6 is rumored for some exciting new features, but if you were expecting Apple to stick to its traditional pricing plan for the next-generation iPhone, you might be out of luck, according to one analyst.

Susquehanna International Group analyst Chris Caso claims that Apple will deviate from its normal iPhone pricing for the 6 due to the larger screen it will pack. The decision will help Apple protect its gross margins, which would be affected without a price spike due to increasing material costs.

"We see the potential for the iPhone 6 price point to move higher, to avoid the (profit) margin erosion that occurred when iPhone 5 launched," Caso said, according to Investors.com. "When iPhone 5 was launched, Apple's phone margins declined because the new features (most notably the display) added cost to the bill of materials, yet the price point of the phone remained unchanged. Since we're expecting a host of new features in the iPhone 6 (including a larger screen), we expect the bill of materials cost of the phone to increase as well."

He added: "At present, the launch price of iPhone 5S (both subsidized and unsubsidized) is the same as the launch prices for Samsung's Galaxy S series of flagship phones," Caso said. "As such, we think Apple could get away with a $50 to $100 premium for a larger screen size iPhone 6. We think such a move could avoid the margin erosion that occurred when the iPhone 5 was launched."

Caso said that he believes Apple will not drop the price of its previous-gen iPhones when the iPhone 6 releases, with the iPhone 5C serving as an indicator that the Cupertino-based company will instead opt to release new devices at lower price points. He also stated that the sixth-generation iPhone could release in mid-2014 with a June announcement.
