ITU says mobile broadband is fastest growing technology ever

A new report from the ITU claims mobile broadband is "the fastest growing technology in human history".

Mobile networks can now be considered "the fastest growing technology in human history", according to a new study - far surpassing the rate of growth posted by fixed-line broadband.

However, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) also warned that spectrum efficiency will need to be improved tenfold if providers hope to accommodate the "present growth in demand".

According to the ITU's 2013 State of Broadband report, published this month, Singapore, Japan and Finland are the three countries in the world where mobile broadband penetration is highest, reports the Register.

The UK came 14th, behind Australia in sixth and the US in ninth - though recent research from PricewaterhouseCoopers suggests that Britons will be spending more on mobile internet services than fixed-line access by 2015.

Meanwhile, the ITU noted that two-thirds of the planet's population are still unconnected. The organisation went on to express concern that the private sector would not be able to provide universal broadband access without extra funding, on account of the higher costs of connecting remote users.

"The key to unlocking universal service is solid consideration of how to fund the last five to ten per cent of subscribers and who should bear these additional costs," the organisation commented.
