Watch out world: High-flying Spurs are not even out of second gear yet!

Having lost 3-0 to West Ham United at the Lane in what was a miserable afternoon of football last time out, it was good to see us bounce back against another claret and blue side, claiming all three points at Aston Villa.

International football punctured the time since the West Ham game, and in the early stages it looked like Spurs had no handle on the game.

That’s not to say Villa threatened us, but there was simply no urgency or pacey tempo to our movement. It was all a touch pedestrian. The usual issue of narrow football and no width (across both flanks) made for a congested midfield.

But this is a Spurs side that keeps on going. We got lucky with the first goal from man of the moment Andros Townsend as his cross sneaked in.

The second goal however was total class.

Roberto Soldado, who tenaciously started the move by winning the ball in the first place, produced a superb finish to end it after some sweet one touch football involving Lewis Holtby and Paulinho.

Paulinho, quiet until the second half, grafted hard with typical unselfish play and Sandro (in his first Premier League start of the season) was outstanding alongside him.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Sandro’s injury last season cost us Champions League football.

If this is him on the path back to full fitness then our midfield is going to be very strong as we creep towards the Christmas period.

We have equaled our best ever start to a Premier League season without ever getting out of second gear.
