NHIA Under Rebranding-Goes Biometric

In its effort at enhancing efficiency the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has introduced a new card with special security features for members of the scheme.

Unveiling its improved logo and the new card at the official launch commemorating the 10th anniversary of National Health Insurance Scheme last Thursday, September 19, 2013 the Chief Executive Officer, Sylvester Mensah said the Scheme has grown from being a baby to now becoming a giant in healthcare financing in Ghana after ten years of its introduction.

According to him, the immense importance of the scheme is evident across the country adding that the scheme caters for over 90 percent of patients who visit most health facilities across the country.

The introduction of the scheme he said has “occasioned an improvement in the healthcare seeking behavior of many people who now seek medical attention earlier than before”.

Mr. Mensah said Ghana’s Health insurance is an emerging model for countries in the developing world and an international hub for learning and experience sharing. Touching on the many achievements of the NHIA, Mr. Mensah said the free maternal health care has drastically reduced the maternal mortality and infant morbidity rate in the country.

He however added that the NHIA is not oblivious of the challenges facing the scheme and they are doing their possible best to ensure that the rebranding of the scheme will help in the efficiency in their delivery.

The launch which was on the theme ‘Towards Universal Health Coverage: Increasing Enrolment whilst Ensuring Sustainability’ will cover a two-month period to be climaxed by an International Conference from November 4-6, 2013.

The unveiling of the enhanced NHIS brand was done by Hon. Tia Alfred Sugri, deputy Minister for Health on behalf of the Minister of Health, Ms Sherry Ayittey.

The launch of the 10th anniversary gives way for the official start for the issuance of the instant NHIS ID cards based on biometric data.

A number of activities including regional inter-schools quiz competitions, lecture series, health walks, special registration and district health screening exercises have been planned to mark the 10th anniversary of the NHIS.
