Last Sunday (19/10), our celestial neighborhood lived omaior astronomical event of recent times: the passage of Comet C / 2013 A1 Siding Spring to an incredibly small distance of Mars. To get an idea of the proximity of the meeting, about 140,000 kilometers that separated the two bodies is equal to one third of the distance between Earth and our moon. We were all anxious about the first images of the space traveler crossing the Martian skies - and finally they began to emerge.

The above record, released today by the European Space Agency (ESA, its acronym in English), shows the two stars about 17 hours of closest approach. The image is the result of combining several exposures of three minutes, taken over the course of nearly an hour, technique used by astrophotographers to achieve optimal clarity. This flickr meet other amazing clicks made here on Earth.

But if you, like me, was especially eager to check out the photos taken by the probes and satellites that are there on Mars, will love to look down here. NASA released images from the robotic probe Opportunity, which scours the Martian surface, and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter satélire, studying the climate of the Red Planet, and also analyzes the possibility of the existence of water in a remote past yesterday. The agency conducted maneuvers in their rigs for safety assurance, and announced that none of them was affected by the passage of the comet.
