34-year-old nursing mother under investigation for cannabis smuggling

A 34-year-old nursing mother is currently undergoing interrogation in connection with an unlawful exportation of 6 kilogrammes of cannabis to China, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, said on Monday.

Chizoba Mbonu, who is nursing a three month old baby, allegedly attempted to smuggle compressed, dried Indian hemp hidden inside a luggage meant for export on an Ethiopian airline flight.
The NDLEA said that its officials detected the drug during routine inspection of cargoes at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, NAHCO, shed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
Ms. Mbonu, a Clearing and Forwarding agent, has a choice to be with her baby while investigation lasts, according to the NDLEA.
“The bag contains clothing, cell phones, cell phone batteries, and shoes,” Hamza Umar, NDLEA Lagos Airport Commander, said.
In her statement to the NDLEA, the suspect claimed ignorance of the contents of the bag.
“I am a licensed Clearing and Forwarding agent with five years experience. I was given the bag by a client to send to China,” Ms. Mbonu said.
“I was told that the bag contained sample goods, unfortunately drug was hidden inside,” Ms. Mbonu added.
Ahmadu Giade, NDLEA Chairman, said that the suspect will be charged to court soon.
“Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons connected with the case,” Mr. Giade said.
“The agency will continue to prevent drugs from coming in and out of the country through superior counter-narcotic operations,” he added.
