Researchers Explore New Way to Microscopically View Battery Electrodes Bathed in Electrolyte

Discoveries in the field of electronics and battery backed systems are gaining new heights. This time, researchers wet when immersed in electrolyte at a microscopic watch battery electrodes have developed. This helps simulate real situations in real batteries.

The technique, named as transmission electron microscopy, is regularly used by life sciences researchers to study the wet surroundings, but this time the technique is implemented effectively in rechargeable battery research.

The study has been published in journal Nano Letters in December 11 issue. As per the results of the study, now the battery materials could be studied in dry conditions.

As per materials scientist, Chongmin Wang of the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, “The liquid cell gave us global information about how the electrodes behave in a battery environment”. He added that this will also help in searching the solid electrolyte layer.

Chongmin Wang along with his colleagues used high-powered microscopes to observe how the disappearing and flowing of positively charged ions distort electrodes. Impinging into the electrode's pores makes the electrodes swell up and gradually it gets wear up.

The team built a battery that has one silicon electrode and one lithium metal electrode. Both of these electrodes are immersed in an electrolyte.
