Young admitted this in an interview on BBC World News TV last Friday as she talked about how it feels to carry the Philippine flag after winning Miss World 2013.

“It’s funny because I’ve always told people that I did think of pageants as very superficial. That’s one of the reasons why I didn’t join before even though people have constantly been telling me to join. I didn’t see any essence, what would I get out of it? What would be my purpose?” Young said.

Young said she maintained this stand until she came across Miss World, which she believes is a pageant with a cause.

“I have been hearing about it for a time and the fact that its main focus is charity, it means beauty with a purpose. It hit me. Then I knew that if maybe that was what I wanted, it wasn’t about the glitz and the glamor at all. It was more of how you were as a person,” she said.

Young said her win was very timely because it only showed what Filipinos can achieve amid the conflicts confronting the nation.

“It’s heartwarming for me because we’ve had a lot of issues going on for the past month back home with tragedies that have been happening. For me to be that spark of hope and inspiration back home, for me to be able to uplift the spirits of my fellow Filipinos, is an honor,” she said.

Now that she’s been hailed as the winner, Young said she is planning to reach out to less privileged people -- true to the real essence of Miss World.

“I always say you can do it big in small ways. It’s great to start small because you have that foundation of getting to where you want to be and I think I’d rather start small in helping encourage people and putting that hope that there’s tomorrow that they don’t have to suffer, that they don’t have to think negatively. It’s always that positive outlook that makes people evolve,” she said.
