Queen launches Commonwealth Games baton relay

The baton relay for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow began on Wednesday. Olympic cycling legend Chris Hoy delivered the baton to Buckingham Palace, where it was handed to the Queen.

After the Queen placed a handwritten message to the commonwealth on a rolled up parchment into the baton it began it’s journey.

The first baton bearer was Scotland’s Alan Wells, who won the 100 metres gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

The baton will travel more than 190,000km through 70 Commonwealth territories before arriving in Glasgow for the Opening ceremony on July 23 when the Queen will read the message inside.
